Transfering Files and Managing Files on your Site

Using FTP

There are two main protocols or methods to access your site – HTTP (using a web browser) and FTP using FTP software. Web browsers also have some limited FTP capability, but we firmly recommend that you use FTP software for the FTP protocol and a web browser only for HTTP transfers on the Navigator and Web Widget.

FTP using FTP software is best if you are regularly transferring large files as you can drag and drop whole folder trees and easily resume broken uploads and downloads.

Web transfers using the Navigator and Web Widget are great for the less frequent user who is unfamiliar with, or unable to install FTP software, or where FTP is blocked by the corporate firewall. In such cases use HTTP on the Navigator and Web Widget.

Supported FTP Software and Browsers
We support all known FTP client software. Commonly used products are:

Filezilla – Free for Windows and Mac
CuteFTP – Commercial for Windows and Mac
Cyberduck – Free for Mac
Transmit – Commercial for Mac

All Web browsers can download by FTP. Internet Explorer and Windows Explorer are supposedly able to upload by FTP but the capability is limited and flawed and not recommended by FTP-Stream. If you want to upload using a Web browser use the Navigator and Web Widget. If you want to upload by FTP use FTP software.

Most FTP softoware also supports the encrypted protocols SFTP and FTPS.

Your FTP Address and Login Details
Your site has an address in the ftpstream.com domain. To check the address go to the control panel and the Site Properties tab. Additionally you or your system administrator may have setup an address for you using your company domain.

You can login using the admin login which gives you access to all your customer folders, or use any of the logins you have setup on the control panel. These logins are jailed to the home folder you allocated.

Some FTP software invites you to enter a port number, this can be left at the default value or left blank. There are two FTP modes Active and Passive. Both are supported by FTP-Stream. Passive FTP is designed to be be more firewall friendly and is the usual default.
