If your organisation works in and with China, you’ll know that organisations can face a number of different problems – many of which we discussed in this blog.

But there’s no doubt that the slow Chinese internet is one of the biggest obstacles an IT department will face.
While huge investment is underway to bring Chinese internet to the level of its economic rivals, snail-paced China file sharing is still a major bone of contention for businesses.

According to Forbes, Chinese internet speeds reached an average of 3.39Mb/s in 2014. That might be close to the global average of around 4Mb/s, but it’s still miles behind global superpowers – and streets away from the world’s fastest, South Korea (24Mb/s).

The US, by comparison, averages 11 and the UK 18Mb/s.

Slow speed affecting business

china statisticsThis sluggish internet speed affects the productivity of businesses. A recent study by the European Chamber of Commerce found that 9 out of 10 companies operating in China said that its internet restrictions are hurting their business and affecting sharing speeds.

More research by the American Chamber of Commerce found that 72% of US businesses felt that slow and unstable internet was impeding their efficiency in China.

Patrick Chovanec, a former economics professor at Tsinghua University in Beijing, said:

“Just having to overcome the mundane issues of slow Internet speeds and restricted access impacts your productivity and ease of conducting business in China. It’s a daily burden.”

How Maytech Circumvents the Chinese ‘Speed’ Problem

FTP-Stream China from Maytech is a cloud FTP solution that’s a viable, fast alternative to normal Chinese file transfer systems. Data can be sent up to 40 times faster than direct transfer from the US or Europe.

How? FTP-Stream uses four different features to help businesses share data with and from China faster than ever before:

  • A data centre in Hong Kong and strong links to China Telecom and China Netcom in Shanghai that allow users in China and Southeast Asia to share files fast
  • A second mirrored centre for sending and receiving data from the US and Europe
  • A proprietary transport protocol that can accelerate file transfer by up to 40 times in high-latency links
  • Quick, uncongested fibre links for sending files fast across the Pacific Ocean and west to Europe

As a result, a 1GB file can be sent to China and downloaded in a matter of minutes.

Streamlined administration

While FTP-Stream China also allows for superfast China file sharing, its simple tools and replication rules means that processes are streamlined from an administrative level too. Local and remote folders can be replicated and mirrored to ensure that employees don’t waste time downloading files.
